5 Tips To Get Motivated In The Morning

I’ll preface this post by saying…I hate training in the morning. I would much rather have a big breakfast, get some work done in the morning, then train mid afternoon. I feel much better that way. It took me a while to figure out when I’m most productive for my training sessions though. It might take some practice for you too. With that being said, my benefit is that I work in a gym, so I don’t have an excuse and I can train anytime I want to. For you, the morning might be the right time because the session can get your day started on the right foot. Also, with summer right around the corner, you might have plans that don’t include an afternoon or evening training session. If you conquer the session in the morning, you won’t have an excuse to skip a session. Here are 5 tips to get you going:

1. Schedule with a friend

When you have someone else to keep you accountable, you’re a lot less likely to cancel, you get social support from someone with similar goals, and you have to someone to share your fun with!

2. Get to bed early

Aim for 7 hours every night, and try to hit the hay early. Get more hours of sleep before midnight; your circadian rhythm will thank you.

3. Pack your bag the night before

Have everything ready to go the night before. That means, your water bottle, your gym clothes, your after gym clothes, your post-workout nutrition, your cell phone, keys, etc.

4. Eat something!

You need to BREAK THE FAST! I’ve had clients try both strategies…not eating something before a morning session, and eating something before a morning session. Eating something before a session works best…every single time. You’ll have more energy for the session, you’ll get more out of the session, and you won’t get that light headed feeling. It could be as simple as a protein shake, or more complicated like an omelet. Whatever it is, just make sure it’s something.

5. Write down your goal

Having the written goal somewhere near your bed and being able to see it before you go to bed can be a great motivator. In fact, you might want to paste your goal right over your “snooze” button.

So do you train in the morning? Have any tips that work for you?

Having everything packed is crucial. Just make sure you have all of your shower items packed as well. No one likes a smelly co-worker.
