Continuing Education

Anyone that knows me and my training philosophy should know how I feel about continuing education. Regardless of what field you’re in, you should be doing some kind of con. ed. I highly doubt that things aren’t constantly changing in your field.

The same goes for the field of fitness, strength training, and rehabilitation. Its constantly changing, and since clients and athletes put their lives in our hands, I believe as trainers we need to stay on leading edge of new techniques. I’m planning on working toward mastering my craft this weekend at a 3-Day Functional Training Summit in Long Beach, CA.

7 Questions to Ask Your Trainer or Strength Coach

Personal training is just like any other profession. There are good trainers and there are not so good trainers. You have to make a decision on whether or not you want to spend your hard earned cash on someone who knows what they’re doing or not. Here is a list of seven questions to ask your potential trainer before hiring him or her.

1. What is your education and certification?

An academic background in Exercise Science or a related field will ensure that your trainer has a solid foundation and knowledge base in exactly what they will be coaching you on.

Squatting hurts my knees!

If squatting hurts your knees when you’re training or working out, more than likely…you’re not doing them right. There are a few schools of thought, but here’s my opinion on the matter: Squatting below parallel is the best way to squat for exercise. If you can’t squat below parallel and under control, you need to improve your squatting pattern before you start adding weight. It doesn’t make sense to, in Gray Cook’s words, “put fitness on top of dysfunction.” In other words, increase your joint mobility and muscle flexibility until you’re able to drop down into a deep squat.

Healthy Grilled Chicken Recipe

OK, I have to admit, I stole this from my wife Amanda, who stole it from her parents. Amanda makes this *almost* as good as I do. Although, you can’t really mess it up

If you live in the Seattle area, there’s no better time to fire up the grill than the summer, although I’m known to use that thing all year round. Before I tell you the awesome chicken recipe I should give some idea on what you should get before you make it, so here goes.
